(Red Deer, Alberta) – This year’s Green Deer program was a huge success with more than 5,260 participants in total.
“We are thrilled with the support that we received from the community this year,” explains Suzanne Jubb, Community and Program Facilitator. “We are lucky to have so many community members who are passionate about our city and volunteer their time to clean up our parks.”
Many varieties of groups registered for the program this year including:
- 83 family and friend groups
- 18 schools (4435 students in total)
- 13 businesses
- 11 community associations
- 11 clubs
- 1 sport group
Groups or individuals that volunteered for the program were eligible for several great prizes. The following groups or people were prize winners this year:
- Fairview Elementary School (Sally Frazer’s grade 3/4 class)
- Entrance into Summer Sizzler (an outdoor pool party for the school at the Recreation Centre) an ultimate slurpee coupon and transportation to and from the Recreation Centre by a City of Red Deer chartered Transit bus.
- Eastview Middle school (Sheilla Fowler-Green’s grade 6 class)
- each participant won a free single admission swim pass and slurpee coupon.
- Mr and Mrs Bill Lees
- winner of the Barbecue Event and barbecue. Bill and his wife picked 14 bags of garbage on their own.
“We’d like to encourage citizens to help us keep Red Deer clean all year long,” says Jubb. “We thank everyone for their support and look forward to their participation next year.”
In an effort to keep Red Deer clean all year, the Adopt a Park program was created in addition to Green Deer, which offers individuals or groups the opportunity, along with The City’s parks department, to become stewards of a specific park area for the year.
