Intersection lights being changed to LED

June 2, 2008

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Workers begin replacing intersection lights with LED lights starting Monday, June 2.

The project will replace all traffic and pedestrian lights at 125 signalized intersections in the city. The replacement is expected to take three months to complete.

Disruptions to traffic signals are not expected. If traffic signals are affected or set to flash, drivers are reminded to treat the intersection as a four-way stop and to use caution. Your patience and cooperation is appreciated.

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. The diodes are small, solid and extremely energy-efficient. LEDs reduces energy demand by 85 per cent to 95 per cent compared to their incandescent counterparts

Other benefits include: reduced carbon emissions from approximately 1400 tonnes per year using incandescent lights to 100 tonnes per year using LED – a 93 per cent drop in emissions; reduced power consumption costs from $176,000 to $55,000; and reduced operating costs of $40,000.
