Pay your property taxes today - avoid late penalties

June 23, 2008

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Property owners only have one more week to pay 2008 property taxes that are due Monday, June 30.

“We encourage citizens to pay early, and we offer a variety of payment options that make it easy to do,” said Joanne Parkin, Assessment and Taxation Services Manager. “People sometimes don’t account for the time it takes banks and financial institutions to process payments. If The City doesn’t receive payment on or before the deadline, the property owner will have to pay late penalties.”

Tax payments can be made by coming in-person to the City Hall cashiers or dropping the payment off in an envelope in the City Hall night depository located on the east side of the building. The deadline for in-person payments at City Hall is Monday, June 30 by 4:30 p.m.

Payments can also be sent by mail, providing they have a June postmark, to The City of Red Deer, Box 5008, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 3T4. Most chartered banks, credit unions, trust companies and ATB Financial branches will also accept payment, but it is property owners’ responsibility to consider processing times. These processing times must also be considered when paying by internet and telephone banking as The City of Red Deer must receive payment on or before the due date.

Property owners who miss the payment deadline will have to pay a 6 per cent penalty for the outstanding property taxes owing. The penalty is calculated in a lump sum adjustment on July 1. For example, if $2,000 is left unpaid on June 30, a penalty of 6 per cent or $120 would be applied to the account on July 1.
