Public reminded about 10-digit dialing starting June 23

June 16, 2008

(Red Deer, AB) – Starting next week, all phone numbers in Alberta will change from seven to 10 digits. After June 23, phone numbers for City of Red Deer services and departments will be 10 digits including the area code.

At this time, all City departments and services have phone numbers starting with area code 403. For example, The City’s main phone number after June 23 will be 403-342-8111 instead of 342-8111.

Eventually, Alberta will introduce phone numbers with a new 587 area code. At some point in the future, some City departments or services may have area codes other than 403.

Three-digit phone numbers, such as Emergency Service 911, are not affected by this change and will remain three digits.

Callers are reminded to add the area code to phone numbers starting on June 23. After June 23, callers who only dial seven digits will hear a message reminding them to dial the area code for all phone numbers, but their calls will still be connected. After September 9, callers will have to dial all 10 digits of phone numbers or their call will be disconnected.
