Tank your leaky toilet – apply for a rebate
June 27, 2008
(Red Deer, Alberta) – Using less water pays, and now you can save even more when you tank your leaky toilet and apply for a rebate from The City.
The Toilet Rebate Program gets underway July 1 when homeowners can apply for a rebate of up to $100 for installing dual flush toilets. Those who replace high flow toilets with six litre toilets can apply for a $50 rebate.
“It is all about responsible water use,” said Andrea Pagee, Water Conservation Specialist. “Toilets account for about one third of an average household’s water use, and The Toilet Rebate Program is just one more way we can motivate people to purchase low flow toilets and reduce residential water waste.”
Only toilets that meet identified Canadian Water and Wastewater Association performance standards will qualify for rebates. Qualifying toilets will be marked at participating retail outlets.
“Homeowners can apply for up to two rebates per household,” said Pagee. “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to be sustainable, conserve water and take part in the Toilet Rebate Program.”
All applicants must own the residential property in Red Deer where the new toilet(s) is installed. Applicants must also have a current City utility account and purchase a qualifying toilet after July 1.
Once the new toilet is installed, homeowners can fill out the application form, attach the original receipt, and visit The City of Red Deer Waste Management Facility for free disposal of the old toilet. Upon disposal, application forms will be stamped with a toilet disposal verification stamp.
“We want to ensure high flow toilets are destroyed and not reinstalled elsewhere,” said Pagee.
Rebates are processed on a first come, first served basis and are credited to the homeowner’s utility account within eight to 12 weeks. Toilets installed as part of new construction or during renovations that require a plumbing permit do not qualify for rebates. You do not need a permit if you are simply replacing an existing toilet.
All application forms must be mailed to Environmental Services at Box 5008, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 3T4.
