City and County Joint Planning Open House

March 12, 2008

(Red Deer, Alberta) - The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County invite the public to an open house to share information and gather public comment. This open house will discuss a joint planning initiative for areas in Red Deer County and The City of Red Deer’s growth area, including:

  • Location of major roadways
  • Future land uses (residential, commercial, etc.)
  • Major servicing infrastructure and phasing
  • Areas where there could be rural residential development nodes
  • Planning policy direction/sustainability

The open house will be held:

        Date: Saturday, March 15, 2008
        Time: 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (doors open at 9 a.m.)
        Location: Capri Hotel (Santano Room)

Guest speaker, Randall Arendt, an advocate of conservation planning and rural-urban fringe design, will speak at 10 a.m. An open discussion forum with municipal staff, consultants and Arendt will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Discussions at the open house will cover the overall study design, public consultation process, milestones and timelines.

Red Deer County Mayor, Earl Kinsella and The City of Red Deer Mayor, Morris Flewwelling said this planning initiative will be the framework for future development in areas of the County and The City’s growth area. The public will have the opportunity and are encouraged to provide input to planners during this session.

“The open house is very important as The City and County continue to work towards a strong intermunicipal relationship,” said Kinsella. “Involving all stakeholders will be instrumental as we move forward.”

“Stakeholder input is key, especially considering the magnitude of this joint planning initiative,” added Flewwelling. “Covering 140,000 acres around the City, this plan will not be a small feat but we are committed to ensure consultation and collaboration are integrated every step of the way.”

Last year The City and The County began the process of developing a new Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP). The IDP, approved in July 2007, began the collaborative process towards a long-term vision for both municipalities and the region, solidifying future growth patterns. This joint planning initiative builds on the IDP foundation of collaborative planning.
