(Red Deer, Alberta) – Misuse of an outdoor fire pit was the source of a backyard fire at a residence last night that quickly spread to a tree and a neighbouring yard.
“This fire was the result of improper use of a backyard fire pit,” explains Wes Van Bavel, Fire Prevention Officer. “The resident was illegally burning yard waste in the open pit, when the fire got out of control.”
Red Deer Emergency Services responded to the fire around 6:30 p.m. The fire moved quickly and had the potential to destroy several homes as it spread into a tree and then a neighbour’s yard. Damages are estimated at around $2,000.
“When spring hits and things dry up, we start to see more fires in residential, recreational and wooded areas,” said Van Bavel. “We want to remind people that there are restrictions of what they can burn in their outdoor pits in the city.”
Under the Fire Permit Bylaw, citizens may burn clean, dry, untreated wood or charcoal in a fire pit, outdoor fireplace, portable fire receptacle or barbecue for the purpose of cooking or obtaining warmth. The Fire Permit Bylaw also states citizens may not burn yard waste within the city limits. Yard waste should be transported to The City's Waste Management facility. The minimum penalty for violating any provisions of the Fire Permit Bylaw is $210.
Residents are reminded they can freely dispose of all yard waste free of charge at The City’s Waste Management facility from May 5 to May 10 during The City’s annual spring clean up.
Citizens should call 911 if they notice a fire in their neighbourhood, or 403-346-5511 if improper use of a backyard fire pit is witnessed.
