Bike to Work Breakfast cancelled due to rainy weather

May 21, 2008

(Red Deer, Alberta) - Due to the forecast of continued rain tomorrow morning, The City of Red Deer is cancelling the Bike to Work Breakfast for this year. The breakfast was slated to be held Thursday morning from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Recreation Centre.

“We are disappointed that we have to cancel such a popular annual event this year, as it is a great way to promote non-vehicle transportation and active lifestyles,” said Suzanne Jubb, Community and Program Facilitator with Recreation, Parks and Culture. “We urge people to ride, walk or explore non-vehicle transportation wherever possible throughout the summer. The breakfast is meant to inspire healthy and sustainable choices, and we can still make those choices every day.”

Each year, The City promotes safe biking practices in partnership with the David Thompson Health Region, the RCMP and schools through the Better Biking Program in the community. The annual breakfast encourages other members of the community to consider using their bicycles as their mode of transportation to work. The breakfast normally kicks off the Summer Active Living Challenge.

Joey Leslie with Rise Up Red Deer says that the annual challenge against Grande Prairie will continue regardless of the weather.

“People may log their hours of activity indoors or out of doors, so we’re still up for showing Grande Prairie who the most active city is,” said Leslie. “Peak Fitness, Athletic Training Centre, Only Women’s Fitness and the World Gym will also still offer free drop-in admission all day tomorrow, to support Red Deer in the challenge.”

The Bike to Work event would not be possible without the generous support of community businesses.

“We want to thank our program sponsors, Sobeys, Piper Creek Optimist Club, Red Deer Primary Care Network, Red Deer Advocate, Scotia Bank, Big 105 and the Downtown Business Association for their support,” said Jubb. “Their commitment to our community and this initiative is commendable.”
