City Launches Greater Downtown Action Plan
May 15, 2008
(Red Deer, Alberta) – An update of Red Deer’s Greater Downtown Action Plan is underway. This review and update will consolidate all downtown plans and initiatives into one comprehensive strategy while creating a clear and updated urban design framework to guide growth and expansion.
“We want to continue to build on the strengths of our downtown and guide new and vibrant development for the future,” said City Manager, Craig Curtis.
The Greater Downtown Action Plan (GDAP) will encompass most of the areas in the river valley, south of the river, including the city commercial centre, Parkvale, Cannery Row, and Riverlands. In addition, related plans such as the Chamber of Commerce’s Riverwalk project will be fed into this review. These plans need to be considered as part of the overall GDAP planning process.
The City has hired consultants Lorne Daniel and John Hull to coordinate a series of stakeholder and public input processes over the next six months. Daniel and Hull were involved in the original plan adopted by City Council in August 2000. More details will be released in the coming weeks about a series of public involvement opportunities being held the week of June 23.
“We want to encourage residents to share their ideas about our downtown. It is important we hear from a broad cross section of residents about the vision they have for the future of the downtown,” said Mayor Morris Flewwelling.
The consultants have established a web site at www.downtownplan2008.ca. The site will provide further information and the opportunity for residents to sign up for a project e-mail newsletter.
