Free Yard Waste Week starts today

May 5, 2008

(Red Deer, Alberta) – From May 5 to 10, Red Deer residents can drop off unlimited amounts of yard waste for free at The City’s Waste Management Facility. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, tree branches and garden material.

“Each spring we offer a Free Yard Waste Week to accommodate extra yard waste that is generated as residents get their yards back into shape,” said Janet Whitesell, Environmental Planning Engineer for The City of Red Deer. “We then turn this yard waste into useful compost.”

The City reminds residents that all plastic bags must be removed from the yard waste, and no garbage is permitted. Free drop-off is available to Red Deer residents only and no commercial haulers are accepted.

Finished compost is available for sale at the site for $15 per cubic yard. Residents can also bag their own compost at $3 per bag. Bags are provided at the scale house.

The Waste Management Facility is located at 1709 40 Avenue, just off the Delburne Road. The Facility will be open for yard waste drop-off, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
