(Red Deer, Alberta) – Mayor Morris Flewwelling will host an Arbor Day ceremony with grade one students on Tuesday May 6 at 10 a.m., at Ecole Mountview, 4331-34 Street.
Arbor Day is an annual celebration of trees and their benefits to our community. Following Mayor Flewwelling’s presentation to students, a commemorative tree will be planted on the school's grounds.
"Arbor Day teaches children about the importance of trees at an early age," said Elaine Johnson, The City's Urban Forester. “As well as beautifying our communities, trees are vital to the health of our environment.”
In celebration of Arbor Day, every grade one student in Red Deer will receive their very own Colorado Blue Spruce Seedling. This 18 cm seedling will be theirs to plant, water, care for and watch grow. Approximately 1,200 children will plant these seedlings in their backyards or around their homes.
"The more involved children become in taking care of trees, the more we will foster environmental awareness and responsible behaviour," said Johnson.
Along with a seedling, every grade one student will be given a brochure outlining the benefits of trees and how to care for their tree.
The City of Red Deer hosts Arbor Day each year in partnership with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, Parkland Nurseries and Garden Centre, Appollo Landscaping Services and all elementary schools in Red Deer.
