(Red Deer, AB) – Recently, an amendment was made to the Land Use Bylaw, regulating the size, location and number of garage sale signs residents can post.
“Now that it’s spring, we understand people want to hold garage sales and we don’t want to discourage that,” says Joyce Boon, Development and License Supervisor for The City of Red Deer. “We would like people to be aware of the signage guidelines and abide by them when advertising their events.”
The recent amendment to the signage portion of the Land Use Bylaw addresses concerns about the impact of garage sale signs in the community. The amendment also ties into The City’s efforts to reduce waste and keep Red Deer clean.
Garage sale signs must not exceed 1.4 m² (e.g. 0.3 m x 0.46 m) in size, can only be placed on boulevards adjacent to residential districts where the sale is taking place, and cannot be posted more than 24 hours before or after the event. Each garage sale is limited to no more than three signs per event.
In addition to signage size and location requirements, the amendment also limits the number of garage sales in a household to three per year. Regulations about the size and location of open house signs, as well as how long they may remain in place are included in the bylaw. All other types of signs are still prohibited on public boulevards. The penalty for a first offence is $100.
