What steps are you taking?

May 2, 2008

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Do you recycle, borrow books from the library, volunteer with a community group or recycle your cans and bottles? If you do, we want to hear about it.

What small steps do you take to ensure a better more sustainable future? “We want citizens to tell us what they do to ensure a clean, healthy and safe Red Deer for future generations,” said City Manager Craig Curtis.

No matter how big or small your steps, The City wants to hear from you. Tell us if you use natural cleaning products or detergents. Tell us if you carpool to work or school. Tell us if you plan to host a neighbourhood barbecue. These are all ways to affect the bigger sustainability picture. The small things we do add up. Although it isn’t always easy to change the way we do things, our efforts make a positive impact on our community today and for tomorrow.

Citizens are encouraged to share their stories and tell us what small steps they are taking towards a more sustainable Red Deer and what steps The City should take.

All entries received before May 16 are entered in a draw to win one of two block party kits, or our grand prize draw for a rain barrel, courtesy of The City’s Environmental Services department.

The City is producing a long-range sustainability plan for Red Deer but many citizens already make a difference with the small things they do. “Sustainability is about community. It is about being socially, economically, environmentally and culturally responsible, and we need to do it everyday as a community,” said Curtis.
