(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City is asking for written proposals to purchase and develop Red Deer’s first ever joint use multi-unit social care facility, which could be up and running within the next couple of years.
“The need for temporary protective safe housing for children and youth is a growing community concern. The City wants to help take the next step by providing a safe environment combined with intense counseling, support and education for children and youth who need immediate protection from alcohol, drugs and other environmental triggers for substance abuse” said Wendy Klassen Community Development Supervisor.
The City is taking a leadership role in this unique development by facilitating the sale of the lot, which requires partnerships between government, non profit organizations and the public and private sectors.
“We recognize the complexity of implementing community services involving land use, multiple investors and stakeholders,” said Howard Thompson Land and Economic Development Manager. “This is a collaborative process and we are looking for a creative, community minded investor for the development of this facility.”
The proposed site is located in the Timberlands subdivision in northeast Red Deer. The 0.92 acre lot is ideal for a multi-unit development which will provide small home like units for 2 or 3 service providers, possibly in a condo style arrangement. Respecting the security and privacy needs of the neighbourhood and the families being served will be an important factor in the design on this location.
We are holding a special meeting Monday October 20, 2008 at City Hall in order to bring interested parties together to find out more about this demonstration project.
