(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deer resident Connie Burnaby is the winner of a new rain barrel after participating in The City’s rain barrel decorating challenge last month.

Burnaby won the rain barrel draw after she submitted a photo of her barrel painted with an owl and night sky. “It’s all about finding fun ways to conserve water, and using a decorated rain barrel is just one way to do that,” said Andrea Pagee, Water Conservation Specialist.

The public challenge wrapped up on August 31 with four Red Deer residents submitting entries. Local media participated in a similar challenge which saw more than 400 citizens participate by voting on which barrel they liked best.

“We appreciate the community’s commitment to water conservation,” said Andrea Pagee. “Every drop in the bucket counts, and programs like this bring us one step closer to reaching our goal to reduce the amount of water we use by 20 per cent over the next five years.”

Burnaby is among some 250 Red Deer residents who purchased a rain barrel from The City this year and will soon pack it up for the season. “We hope to see even more decorated rain barrels around our city next year,” said Pagee.

People still interested in purchasing rain barrels from The City can visit Kerry Wood Nature Centre at 6300 45 Avenue. Rain barrels are sold for $70 on a first come first serve basis. They are available all year long.
