(Red Deer, Alberta) – Over the Easter weekend, April 10 – 13, an ice flow buildup on the Red Deer River caused some flooding and large ice deposits in some areas of the Waskasoo Park system. On Saturday April 12, various trials within the City were closed. The ice flow released late in the afternoon on April 12 but most closed trails remain blocked with ice, standing water, silt and debris from the Red Deer River.
“Seasonal flooding is not abnormal within the Waskasoo Park system but the magnitude of this ice flow has created a challenging situation for the trails,” said Trevor Poth, City of Red Deer Parks Superintendent.
The following closures will be in effect until sites are cleaned up and safe for public use:
- North Bank Trails linking Bower Ponds to Lions Campground and Bower Ponds to Heritage Ranch;
South Bank Trails linking Gaetz Park (45th Ave) to Taylor Drive;
Great West Adventure Park (BMX Park) - Parking lot, trails, boat launch.
The trail closures will remain in effect until the ice, silt and dangerous debris can be cleaned up. During the cleanup there will be staff and equipment working on the trails and barriers in place at trailheads.
“Park users are reminded not to cross trail barricades and obey all signage as either unsafe trail conditions exist or equipment and staff are working in the area. Safety is our main priority, and it will assist us in cleaning up the trails and parks if we have unobstructed use of the area,” said Poth.
