Cold snap can halt residential street snow removal

December 15, 2009

(Red Deer, Alberta) – City crews are still actively removing snow from city streets, but there have been a few delays with the recent cold temperatures. Crews have been plowing non-stop since the heavy snow falls on Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5.

“Our crews are doing what they can but our equipment can’t work effectively when temperatures are this severe,” said Jim Chase, Roads Superintendent with The City of Red Deer. “Due to the degree of the storm, residents did not experience the usual service level due to the unexpected weather conditions and heavy demand on equipment and crews.”

Unfortunately, snow clearing may also be halted due to unforeseen disruptions which could include mechanical breakdowns, weather below -30°C, or not being able to complete signed area in one day.

Signs may remain in place for two to three days under these circumstances. Residents are advised to pay attention to the times on the signs and make sure their vehicles are not on the street during the restricted parking times, or they will be ticketed and towed.

A snow and ice control map showing the five priority levels and their corresponding streets is available from the Public Works department page on The City of Red Deer’s website at www.reddeer.ca. The Public Works page also offers information on the Snow and Ice Control Policy, snow removal, sidewalk clearing and snow safety. To report any unsafe roadways, please phone Public Works at 403-342-8238.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
