Expertise needed for revamped Assessment Review Board

December 21, 2009

(Red Deer, Alberta) – A new regional approach to assessment appeals gets underway starting January 1, and the Central Alberta Regional Assessment Partnership is seeking people with expertise who want to be part of the revamped assessment review board.

Right now, approximately 15 central Alberta municipalities have joined the Central Alberta Regional Assessment Partnership, and approximately 15 to 20 citizens at large are needed to support the board process.

“We are looking for everyone from retired assessors to those with legal or valuation skills,” said Jackie Kurylo, Appeals Coordinator. “The need for this board stems from recent changes to provincial legislation surrounding the assessment complaint and appeal system. With the right people, we can establish a regional assessment review board that enables us to create a more understandable, effective and accessible review system for everyone.”

Board members will be responsible for issuing decisions on disputes relative to property assessment. Once selected, they will receive training provided by the Foundation of Administrative Justice and Municipal Affairs. They will also receive remuneration for their responsibilities plus the opportunity to network with like minded individuals within the region.

Board members will be selected by a nomination review committee made up of five representatives from member municipalities. The nomination review committee will help ensure adequate expertise and knowledge of all board members. Selecting 15 to 20 members also helps ensure a diverse pool of members to pull from when scheduling hearings.

Preference will be given to those with expertise / knowledge on quasi-judicial boards, legal background, or valuation background however all applications will be considered. If interested you must be available during the day for training and hearings. All board members must live within one of the partnering municipalities to be eligible.

The deadline to apply to become a member of the board is January 18, 2010.

Successful applicants will be contacted in mid January.
