(Red Deer, Alberta) – With Red Deer’s Olympic Torch Relay celebration just one month away, Mayor Morris Flewwelling will officially proclaim January 15, 2010 Olympic Torch Relay Day.
The proclamation will be made on December 15 at 1:30 p.m. in the Mayor’s office. Accompanying the Mayor for the proclamation are sponsor representatives Doug McLean of RBC Royal Bank and Chris Kisinger, Red Deer Bottling (Coke), Red Deer Olympic Torch Relay Task Force Chairperson Lyn Radford, and Recreation, Parks & Culture Manager Greg Scott. All participants will don their Olympic red mittens with the Olympic logo on one side and the Canadian Maple Leaf on the palm of their hands.
“We’ve been planning for a year and everything is coming together very well,” says Lyn Radford. “People can expect a lot of exciting activities and entertainment including Alberta’s acclaimed alternative country star Corb Lund as well as local entertainment. This four hour event is free and everyone is invited.”
The Red Deer event is on January 15, 2010 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the parking lot at Westerner Park.
On October 30, the torch began the longest national run in Olympic history. A 106 day, 45,000 kilometre run across Canada with 12,000 torchbearers. From Victoria, the torch headed to the far Canadian North then onwards to the East Coast. It has since headed back across Canada on its way to Vancouver and Whistler.
On January 15, Day 78 of the national journey, it will arrive in Red Deer and kick off a six kilometre relay including 15 torchbearers (chosen by Vancouver Olympic Committee) each carrying the Torch 300 metres. The final torchbearer (a local community leader chosen by the Red Deer Task Force) will carry the torch onto the grounds where everyone in attendance will witness the lighting of Red Deer’s celebration cauldron, which is designed to mimic the eventual torch lighting in Vancouver on February 12.
“Community volunteers have been working hard to develop a tremendous festival that celebrates the Olympic spirit and helps us welcome the Olympic Flame when it comes through Red Deer on January 15,” said Mayor Morris Flewwelling. “This will be a celebration to remember for years to come.”
