Red Deer firefighters "Stepping Up" to raise money for children's charity

December 4, 2009

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deer’s Emergency Services department is inviting the public to join them and Sparky the Dog this Saturday, December 5 as they raise money for The Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity. The event is called "Stepping up for Kids and will be held at Bower Mall from noon until 5 p.m.

The event is held to assist less fortunate children within the community with firemedics climbing revolving stairs throughout the day in their full gear to raise awareness and donations for the charity. Businesses and individuals are invited to pledge money for every flight of stairs climbed by the members.

“Proceeds from our annual fundraisers as well as the many private donations received from the community enable us to reach further into the community and get help to the kids that need it most,” said Benjamin Barthel, firefighter with The City of Red Deer.

The Children’s Charity provides assistance to many families and children’s programs throughout Red Deer every year. The Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity also organizes the Christmas tree pick up and donates to a variety of non-profit groups including The Red Deer Hospice Society, Loaves and Fishes, Women’s Outreach Centre and Shelter, Circus Camp and the Red Deer Regional Hospital.
