City population up 2.4 per cent since 2008
July 2, 2009
(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deer is home to 2,075 new residents – an increase of 2.4 per cent over 2008. This increase brings Red Deer’s total population to 89,891
It’s a positive sign to see a population increase in a year of economic pressures,” said City Manager Craig Curtis. “It speaks to the fact our region continues to move forward in difficult times.”
Last year’s census saw an increase of 2.5 per cent, with a 3.22 per cent increase in 2007.
This year, the strongest growth occurred in the areas of Vanier Woods with 682 new residents and Johnstone Park with 421 new residents. Slight declines in population were experienced in other areas, which may indicate children in those areas have grown up and left the family home, or residents have relocated to another area in the city and their previous residence is still vacant.
Census workers asked residents about the number of people living in the household and the genders and year of birth of each person in the household.
“These questions help us better understand community needs as we plan for future growth and development of our city,” said Jackie Kurylo, Projects Coordinator. “It helps us decide things like when and where to build swimming pools, parks, trails, roads and schools.”
The City thanks all citizens who participated in the 2009 Municipal Census.
