Historian goes down in history
July 27, 2009
(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deer’s own historian, Michael J. Dawe, was awarded the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation at a ceremony in Calgary last week. Red Deer City Council will also recognize Dawe for this commendation at a City Council meeting today.
The Commendation is awarded annually to individuals who contribute in an exemplary manner to the care and well-being of Veterans or to the remembrance of the contributions, sacrifices and achievements of Veterans.
“Michael is a pillar of historical knowledge in our community, and Red Deer is lucky enough to benefit first-hand from his passion for Canada’s military history. This commendation speaks to his dedication and the invaluable contributions he makes in sharing his passion with central Albertans,” said Mayor Morris Flewwelling.
The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation is usually awarded to Veterans, but can be awarded to non-Veterans when appropriate. “Michael Dawe has strong ties to Veterans in this community, and he continually advocates for the acknowledgement of history that has helped shaped Red Deer and central Alberta today,” said Flewwelling.
Although not a Veteran, Dawe is the son of a Second World War Veteran and grandson of a First World War Veteran. As a historian, author and researcher, he has his hand in everything from archival requests to annual Remembrance Day festivities.
Dawe received a certificate and lapel pin for civilian wear during the presentation.
