New RCMP Station officially opens in north Red Deer
July 13, 2009
(Red Deer, Alberta) – Citizens in north Red Deer have a new neighbour nearby - the Red Deer City RCMP.
Emergency Services Station 2, which has been at the 67 Street location since the mid-70s, will now share its facility with the RCMP.
“The combination of the Emergency Services and RCMP functions in one location will benefit the local neighbourhood with increased access and response time,” said Colleen Jensen, Community Services Director, “and it will enhance the synergies between the two departments.”
The existing Emergency Services building was in need of modernization and upgrading to current functional and technical standards. In addition, a new 215 square metre maintenance and apparatus bay was added to the existing fire department operation.
The new 1,550 square metre two-story RCMP Station was added to Emergency Services Station 2 to address some of the overcrowding in the downtown RCMP building, as well as provide better access and response time to north Red Deer and the Queen Elizabeth II highway.
“There is plenty of room to grow in this space”, added Jensen, “and there are great opportunities for RCMP to continue partnering with other organizations to ensure that needs in the community are addressed.”
The 67 Street RCMP north office and Emergency Services Station 2 celebrated their grand opening Saturday with a community celebration and BBQ. The RCMP north office officially opens for business today.
