Red Deerian comes out on top

July 8, 2009

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Alberta has Calgarians and Edmontonians, but now it has Red Deerians too after more than 500 people responded to a recent City poll surrounding a common name for people living in Red Deer.

“The debate surrounding a common name is really about creating a sense of community,” said Tara Shand, Communications Officer. “We want to be on a first name basis with our citizens, and this helps us do that.”

Until now, The City most often refers to people living in Red Deer as citizens or residents. Now, The City will refer to citizens as Red Deerians when appropriate, but people are still encouraged to go by any name they feel best suits them.

“We have a diverse community, and that’s part of what makes Red Deer such a great place to live. It’s a community filled with Red Deerians, Red Deerites, Red Dearies and Red Deerios,” said Shand.

The poll ran from May 22 to July 1. The City received over 500 responses with Red Deerian taking 236 votes and Red Deerite taking 179 votes.

“It was a close race, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Many submissions speak to how people feel about our community, and there are lots of people who are passionate about Red Deer,” said Shand.
