City annexation application approved

October 29, 2009

(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City of Red Deer has been given the green light to expand its boundary by 3,000 hectares following provincial approval of an application to annex land from Red Deer County. The provincial cabinet order was received with an effective date of September 1, 2009.

This application, commonly known as Phase I Annexation, follows the success of The City’s Industrial Annexation in November 2007. While the 2007 annexation provided land mainly for industrial development, Phase I Annexation will provide a greater area for residential, commercial, and industrial growth.

Red Deer City Manager Craig Curtis believes that the annexation will help meet the demand for development in the city’s north and east regions, providing future housing, shopping, and employment options for Red Deer’s growing population.

“Annexation is necessary for any community that has a growing population and a dwindling supply of land, and Red Deer is no exception,” said Curtis. “Even in these difficult economic times, our population and development permit numbers continue to rise. By annexing this land, we will be able to create balanced growth to better accommodate our growing numbers and their diverse needs.”

The annexation encompasses roughly 100 hectares south of the Red Deer River and east of the Queen Elizabeth II highway; 1,300 hectares along the north side of Red Deer; and 1,600 hectares along the east side of the city. These growth areas are part of the Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP), a long-term planning document that provides a framework for cooperative land-use planning between The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County.

“The City and the County have embraced a long-term planning model, where collaboration is the cornerstone to our regional success,” said City of Red Deer Mayor Morris Flewwelling. “Working together, we have identified opportunities that will benefit individuals in the greater Central Alberta area, and I am pleased that the Province has allowed us to take the next step in our shared direction.”
