Annual Green Deer campaign starts April 19

 April 15, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Residents are encouraged to participate in Green Deer 2010, an annual city clean-up that starts on Monday, April 19 and runs until June 20.

“Every year, we see how Green Deer positively impacts the look of our city,” said Suzanne Jubb, Community & Program Facilitator with The City of Red Deer. “When winter melts away, trash and litter are exposed. Green Deer helps to keep our community beautiful and enjoyable for everyone.”

Another positive aspect of Green Deer is it brings people together. Starting April 19, neighbours, friends and coworkers will work together, challenge each other and show their commitment to the environment.

“When we all work together and take small steps to keep our city clean, it can have a huge impact,” said Jubb. “One of the things we encourage is for people to take a garbage bag and a cleaning glove with them when they go for walks. This is an easy way to be proactive in keeping our neighbourhoods beautiful.”

Green Deer’s annual kick-off barbeque is being held on Monday, April 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the parking lot north of the downtown skateboard park (corner of 48 Avenue and 43 Street). Residents planning to register can attend the event.

Other ways to register include calling 403-309-8411 or visiting the Red Deer Recreation Centre or the Collicutt Centre. Every group to register will automatically be entered into a draw to win a barbeque event.

Green Deer 2010 sponsors are Save-On Foods, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, KG Country/Z99, Fas Gas Plus Community Care, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and The City of Red Deer.
