(Red Deer, Alberta) – City census workers are getting ready to knock on doors starting Friday, April 9 when the 2010 Municipal Census gets underway.
A census is an official door-to-door count of the number of people living in Red Deer. Census information is used to determine population and calculate grants.
“The economy may have slowed down, but Red Deer has a strong economic base,” said City Manager Craig Curtis. “It’s hard to say what growth might look like this year, but our need to plan for the future hasn’t changed. The census is about assessing our community, thinking long term, and continuing to provide the necessary services to our residents.”
In 2009, there were 2,075 new residents who made Red Deer their home, an increase of 2.4 per cent over 2008. The increase brings Red Deer's total population to 89,891 people.
“The census helps us better understand community needs and plan for future growth and development,” said Frieda McDougall, Deputy City Clerk. “It helps us decide things like when and where to build swimming pools, parks, trails, roads and schools.”
Census workers will collect information on the number of people living in each household, the gender, year of birth of each person in the house and if they are a Canadian citizen.
Census enumerators will go door-to-door and visit every house in Red Deer. They will carry picture identification cards. Citizens with any questions about the identity of a census worker should phone The City census office at 403-342-8317.
Census results will be released and posted at www.reddeer.ca/census at the end of June.
