Council to review request to release funds from 2010 Capital Budget

April 29, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – City Council will review a request from a task team comprised of The City of Red Deer and the Central Alberta Aquatic Centre to release $200,000 in funding from the 2010 Major Capital Budget.

The Central Alberta Aquatic Centre is a collaboration of aquatic user groups that exists to promote and facilitate the construction of a multi-use aquatic facility in Red Deer. This aquatic facility is also referred to as the Central Alberta Aquatic Centre.

In November 2009, Council approved $200,000 to be set aside for the Central Alberta Aquatic Centre, following the completion of the preliminary planning for the Rotary Recreation Project. As the preliminary planning by Group2 Architecture Engineering Ltd. is nearing completion, members of the task team would like Council to release the allocated amount so they may begin developing a plan for the Central Alberta Aquatic Centre.

“The task team is eager to move forward with the planning process to identify a more concrete concept model, business plan and awareness campaign to fundraise for such a facility,” said Kay Kenny, Recreation Superintendent with The City. “Planning for this facility is beyond the scope and terms of the current Rotary Park study being completed by Group2.”

As an important component of The City’s long-term vision for the Rotary Recreation Project, the Aquatic Centre may be built as an addition to the Recreation Centre. The Aquatic Centre section of the Rotary Recreation Project potentially will be a very large facility, with an indoor Olympic-sized pool and a family-friendly outdoor pool, which will allow for a variety of aquatic-related uses and programs.

The $200,000 will be used to execute more specific planning initiatives for the Aquatic Centre as a follow up to the Rotary Recreation Project. This includes a comprehensive business plan, a concept model, and funds dedicated for raising community awareness.

Council is set to review the request on May 3, and the proposed amenities and site layout for the Rotary Recreation Project will be released to Council and the public in June.
