(Red Deer, Alberta) –The City of Red Deer’s Emergency Services department is reminding residents that there are devastating consequences when cigarettes are not properly put out. Recently there have been close calls in Red Deer and two major fires in Calgary caused by careless disposal of cigarettes into planter pots.
With the dry weather and planting season a month away, Fire Prevention Officer Wes Van Bavel is strongly urging citizens to use common sense when disposing of cigarettes.
“Cigarettes should be extinguished and properly discarded into a metal or glass container,” said Van Bavel. “Fires are easily caused when smoking materials are thrown into compost piles or planter pots due to the materials in them.”
Red Deerians should take proper precautions with planter pots in and around their homes and dispose of their smoking materials properly. By doing this, they will keep not only their families safe but their properties as well.
