Growth in permit statistics driven by new home construction

April 1, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Permit values have risen in March, with a total increase of $3.2 million from this time last year. Residential values reveal the greatest increase of approximately $5 million with 102 permits issued at a value of $7.3 million, compared to 51 permits issued last year at $2.4 million.

Total year-to-date building permit numbers are up by 62 permits, a 26 per cent increase from 2009. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation stated that in 2009, the housing market began shifting from a buyers’ market to a sellers’ market. With fewer existing homes available, the demand for new homes became greater.

A $1 million commercial building permit was issued to Bird Construction for development of a Bed, Bath & Beyond outlet at 850, 5001 19 Street.

Monthly permit statistics will be posted on The City’s website at www.reddeer.ca/inspections.
