Red Deer to help lead Alberta Arts Days celebrations

April 22, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City of Red Deer will set the stage for family-friendly cultural activities when it helps lead Alberta Arts Days celebrations in the fall. Red Deer’s Bower Ponds Stage was among five facilities chosen by the provincial government to be a Feature Celebration Site for the cultural festivities that run from September 17 to September 19.

Red Deer’s selection as a flagship community for the provincial arts and culture celebration was announced on April 20 by Culture and Community Spirit Minister Lindsay Blackett at St. Albert’s Arden Theatre, another Feature Celebration Site. The communities were chosen because of their enthusiasm and participation in the 2009 Alberta Arts Days.

Wendy Meeres, Culture and Community Development Coordinator with The City, feels Red Deer is a natural fit to help lead Alberta Arts Days festivities.

“Red Deer has a vibrant cultural community that offers a dynamic selection of programs, facilities, and events for Red Deerians to participate in and enjoy,” said Meeres. “Partnering with the province as a Feature Celebration Site will allow us to promote arts and culture and ensure that Red Deer remains a community alive with creative opportunities.”

Alberta Arts Days began in 2008 as a way to increase accessibility and awareness of arts and culture for Albertans. As a Feature Celebration Site, Red Deer is planning three full days of community-wide cultural activities. Over 20 community arts organizations have already been meeting to plan activities in the city during the three days. Activities will be happening in the downtown core on Saturday, Bower Ponds Stage on Sunday, and special events at other venues throughout the community on Friday and Saturday evening.

In addition to Red Deer’s Bower Ponds Stage and St. Albert’s Arden Theatre, other facilities chosen to be Feature Celebration Sites are Lethbridge’s Yates Memorial Theatre, Grande Prairie’s Prairie Art Gallery, and the Banff Centre.
