Volunteer for a City committee today

April 28, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deerians can get involved in everything from naming public buildings, to advising City Council on crime prevention initiatives when they volunteer for a City committee.

Right now, The City is looking for citizens who want to volunteer on the following committees:

  • Municipal Features Naming Committee
  • Secondary Suite Regulation Review Committee
  • The Environmental Advisory Committee
  • Crime Prevention and Policing Study/Strategy and Policing Model Review Ad Hoc Steering Committee.

“It’s an exciting way to get involved if you are concerned about our city, and you can help shape policy and make an impact on your community,” said Elaine Vincent, Legislative Services Manager. “What better way to make change and help create a more sustainable Red Deer.”

Red Deer City Council approved funding in the 2010 budget to start an update of Crime Prevention and Policing Strategies as well as conducting a review of the current policing service model in comparison to other policing models. The City is looking for volunteers from the community to participate on this steering committee, including two members from a Community Agency, two members from a Community Association and two citizen representatives.

The Municipal Feature Naming Committee will meet quarterly unless special meetings are called to address specific issues.

Terms of reference for each committee can be found in the Committees Bylaw at www.reddeer.ca/bylaws.

Applications will be submitted in person, by regular mail, fax, email (legislativeservices@reddeer.ca) or online at www.reddeer.ca/councilcommittees. They will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2010. For more information contact Legislative & Administrative Services at 403-342-8132.
