Yard Waste Collection Program begins
April 8, 2010
(Red Deer, Alberta) – Residents can set out yard waste when The City’s door to door Yard Waste Collection Program gets underway next week.
Last year, more than 3,970 tonnes of yard waste was diverted from the landfill through this program. “It allows us to turn grass clippings, leaves and tree trimmings into useful compost. The program helps residents clean up their yard and do something good for the environment at the same time,” said Janet Whitesell, Waste Management Superintendent.
Starting April 12, those taking part in the Yard Waste Program can place grass clippings, leaves and tree trimmings in a metal or plastic garbage container labeled with a yard waste sticker. Residents can also place their yard waste in special bio-degradable paper yard waste bags that can be purchased at local home and garden retail outlets.
All yard waste is picked up on residents’ regular garbage collection day. There is no limit to the amount of yard waste residents can put out as long as it is packaged properly and each container weighs no more than 25 kg. Yard waste put out in plastic bags is collected as garbage and counts towards their five unit garbage limit.
Orange yard waste stickers can be picked up at the Collicutt Centre, Recreation Centre, City Hall or Civic Yards.
Residents can also drop off unlimited amounts of yard waste at the Waste Management Facility from May 3 to 8 as part of The City’s Free Yard Waste Week.
