Good weather provides The City a jump on collector routes
December 30, 2010
The City’s Public Works department is piloting a training program for grader operators; the pilot will provide the opportunity for fieldwork experience when there is down time during the snow removal season. Public Works will begin plowing bus routes adjacent to green spaces and placing the snow in the green spaces. The pilot training program will provide operators with experience that can only be obtained when they are required to operate equipment. The program does not require additional funds as it would be done on regular scheduled staff time, and crews can continue to keep productive between snow storms.
As a number of The City’s more experienced grader operators get closer to retirement, this proactive approach will ensure Public Works will be ready with appropriate staffing levels and reduce the amount of snow to be plowed or removed during a Priority 3 removal.
It is important to remember this is not a full removal on all bus routes or into residential areas. Full removal is only initiated when 10 cm of packed snow has accumulated.
A snow and ice control map showing the five priority levels and their corresponding streets is available from the Public Works department page on The City of Red Deer’s website at
www.reddeer.ca
. The Public Works page also offers information on the Snow and Ice Control Policy, snow removal, sidewalk clearing and snow safety. To report any unsafe roadways, please phone Public Works at 403- 342-8238.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
