City Council ratifies agreement with CUPE Local 417

February 8, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – City Council ratified a new two-year Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 417 today. The agreement is effective January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011.

CUPE Local 417 represents the majority of City employees with the exception of exempt management staff, The City’s Electric Light and Power department, emergency services and transit operations.

After working through a number of changes to the Collective Agreement, City CUPE employees will see a wage increase of 2 per cent on January 1, 2010, 2.25 per cent on August 8, 2010 and 3 per cent on January 1, 2011.

During negotiations, both parties looked at a number of 2010 settlements in other Alberta municipalities. “Most were in the range of 4.5 per cent, and this approved phased approach will result in a budget impact of less than 3 per cent for The City in 2010,” said Marge Wray, Human Resources Manager.

Negotiations proceeded well in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.

“Both parties are satisfied that this agreement meets current and future needs. The two-year agreement will help us maintain stability when it comes to our relationship with CUPE in the future,” said Wray.
