Volunteer for a City committee today

February 2, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deerians can get involved in everything from naming public buildings, parks and trails to advising City Council on crime prevention initiatives when they volunteer for a City committee.

Right now, The City is looking for citizens who want to volunteer on the following committees:

  • Municipal Features Naming Committee
  • Community Housing Advisory Committee
  • Crime Prevention Advisory Committee
  • Heritage Preservation Committee
  • Library Board
  • Municipal Planning Commission
  • Secondary Suite Ad Hoc Review
  • Greater Downtown Action Planning Committee

“It’s an interesting way to get involved, help shape policy and make an impact on your community,” said Frieda McDougall, Deputy City Clerk. “What better way to drive change and help create a more sustainable Red Deer.”

Three citizen representatives are needed for the Municipal Features Naming Committee, which is a new committee this year. “Committee members will evaluate proposals for the naming or renaming of things like buildings, parks, trails, bridges, recreation facilities and natural features,” said McDougall.

The Municipal Feature Naming Committee will meet quarterly unless special meetings are called to address specific issues.

Terms of reference for each committee can be found in the Committees Bylaw at www.reddeer.ca/bylaws. For information about the Library Board contact the Red Deer Public Library.

Applications will be submitted in person, by regular mail, fax, e-mail (legislativeservices@reddeer.ca) or online at www.reddeer.ca/councilcommittees. They will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010. For more information contact Legislative & Administrative Services at 403-342-8132.
