(Red Deer, Alberta) – Residents are encouraged to bring their cameras to the WinterFest celebration at Bower Ponds because, this year, the City’s annual celebration of winter will also showcase Red Deer’s Olympic torch. WinterFest runs Sunday, February 14 from noon to 4 p.m.
“We have heard from citizens who would like an opportunity to view the torch up close,” says Wendy Meeres, Culture Community and Development Coordinator for The City of Red Deer. Meeres also served on the Olympic torch task force. ”We’re bringing it to WinterFest so people can take photographs of themselves with the torch.”
In exchange for getting their photo snapped with the Olympic torch, people will be asked for a small donation to The City of Red Deer CARE subsidy program. The CARE program offers subsidies to individuals and families living in Red Deer who might not be able to otherwise access City activities and programs because of financial constraints.
“It’s a nice fit,” says Meeres. “The torch symbolizes hope, and it’s a great tie-in to feature it at a free community event and link to the CARE program, which offers accessibility to recreation and culture opportunities for everyone.”
WinterFest offers interactive activities for people of all ages, including jam can curling, live entertainment, art and nature crafts, skating and snowshoeing. Food will be sold on site in the Bower Ponds Pavilion and the Cabane à Sucre will be back, selling their traditional maple syrup sweet treats. Main stage entertainment begins at 1 p.m.
Admission to WinterFest is free. The festival will not take place if the temperature drops below -20 degrees Celsius with the wind chill. For more information about WinterFest, please call 403-309-3389.
