(Red Deer, Alberta) – The G.H. Dawe Community Centre is taking shape as reconstruction of the facility continues, with plans to reopen the building in late spring or early summer 2010.
“Right now, the project is on track, on time and on budget,” said Jerry Hedlund, Projects Superintendent. “We’ve made lots of progress over the past 18 months, and we expect to reopen the doors, as planned, late this coming spring.”
The revitalized and expanded community centre will boast five exciting pool basins, including a kids play pool, leisure pool, spray pool, large hot tub and a refurbished four lane lap pool. It will also feature two water slides, a sauna, steam room, three multipurpose rooms, full multifaceted gymnasium, fitness and workout space, and food services.
The revitalized Dawe branch of the Red Deer Public Library will offer integrated program space that accommodates children, teen, adult and family literacy programs in a much larger space. Computers for Internet access, self-checkout machines, a comfortable lounge area with a fireplace, and a brand new collection of books, CDs and DVDs will be available.
“The best part is we’re doing all of this with the environment in mind,” said Hedlund. “This is a LEED shadow project that aligns with sustainable design concepts, and the revitalized community centre will be a more energy efficient building with a green operational model.”
The use of double low “e” glazing, heat recovery systems and HVAC systems creates a well managed building envelope design. High efficiency condensing boilers, dual flush toilets and occupancy sensors will minimize the potable water demand. “We want to reduce our environmental footprint, and that means reducing environmental impacts associated with excessive energy use,” said Hedlund.
Sustainable building principles are being applied throughout the reconstruction phase of the project. Using certified glulam wood beams and purlins in the pool area encourages responsible forest management. Low emitting materials, such as paints, glues, adhesives and flooring materials will be utilized to reduce the amount of odorous and irritating, indoor air contaminants.
“Revitalization of this facility is about building a better experience at the Dawe. It’s about building a sustainable experience, and that means working together from pre-design phase through post-occupancy to ensure we adhere to this model,” said Hedlund.
The G.H. Dawe Community Centre will remain closed until spring 2010. Until then, citizens are encouraged to visit the Collicutt Centre, Recreation Centre, Michener Centre and Lion Plaza or downtown branch of the Red Deer Public Library.
