(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City will begin snow plowing on residential roads beginning Monday, January 18. City crews expect that it will take approximately 20 days to plow and windrow the 225 plus kilometers of residential roads. Guided by the City’s Snow and Ice Policy, snow plowing in residential areas is a discretionary action that is triggered when residential roads become increasingly difficult to drive or become impassable.
This snow plowing will place the City in a better position to handle snowfall that is imminent during the remaining winter and to prepare for the spring melt.
“We have had a higher than normal snowfall so far compared to the last few years in Red Deer,” said Greg Sikora, Public Works Manager. “We are beginning to plow snow on residential streets to ensure roads stay passable and remain in good driving conditions for residents.”
Alternating from one plowing event to the next, snow windrows will be placed adjacent to homes with odd addresses this time. City forces will take special care not to obstruct driveways as a result of plowing; however, the resulting windrows of snow will reduce some of the on-street parking. Residents are asked to start to plan for parking needs, as The City realizes that the windrows of snow will cause some parking problems.
The City will post signs indicating when parking is restricted on residential roads. Residents are advised to pay attention to the times on the signs and make sure their vehicles are not on the street during the restricted parking times, or they will be ticketed and towed. The City also asks that drivers slow down, be patient and use extreme caution when entering a snow plowing operation area.
A snow and ice control map showing the five priority levels and their corresponding streets is available from the Public Works department page on The City of Red Deer’s website at www.reddeer.ca. The Public Works page also offers information on the Snow and Ice Control Policy, snow removal, sidewalk clearing and snow safety.
To report any unsafe roadways, please phone Public Works at 403-342-8238.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
