City applies for Provincial Disaster Recovery Assistance

July 23, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Thanks to the support of citizens, The City of Red Deer has submitted an application to the province of Alberta for funding through the Disaster Recovery Assistance Program, in relation to the severe weather experienced in Red Deer on July 12 and 13.

Following the severe weather last week, citizens who experienced overland flooding were asked to call in and register their damage in order to support this request for funding and to determine the extent of flood damage.

In order to qualify for Disaster Recovery Assistance, the Province must first determine that the city experienced widespread damage as the result of an extraordinary event for which insurance against loss or damage is not reasonably or readily available.

While The City no longer requests residents to contact The City if they have experienced flooding, citizens who have incurred non-insurable damage are encouraged to take the following steps:

  • Contact their insurance provider immediately. If damage is not covered, request a letter stating that the damage is non-insurable.
  • Begin clean-up and restoration efforts immediately in order to prevent any health or safety concerns or further damage to property and contents.
  • Document all actions taken in relation to flooding – take pictures, keep receipts and list damaged property.

If The City’s application for Disaster Recovery Assistance is approved by the province, additional information will be made available at www.reddeer.ca about what steps residents must take in order to submit formal claims for funding.

For information related to clean-up after flooding, visit the Alberta Emergency Management Agency Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Alberta Health Services, or City of Red Deer websites.
