(Red Deer, Alberta) – Two lucky local families will help the G.H. Dawe Community Centre reopen with a splash on August 3, when the revitalized facility opens its doors to the public after two years of renovations. As winners of the First Ride Down the Slide contest, the Reeds and the Davises will take the inaugural trips down the brand new waterslides at the revitalized facility, making history as the official first rides down the slides at the Dawe.
Red Deerian Kyle Reed entered the contest to surprise his family – wife Kai-Li, their adopted children Andy and Andrea, and their son Elijah – with a well-earned gift, while Marilyn Davis entered to show her three foster children – Julia, Amanda, and Taylee – how special they are. Marilyn and her children will be joined by her brother, Sidney, when they ride the slide.
Picking just two families to take the first ride down the slides was not an easy task, according to June Larson, Recreation Facility Supervisor with The City of Red Deer.
“By the time the contest closed on July 23, we had almost 85 incredible entries to choose from,” said Larson. “Narrowing it down to just two winners was almost impossible, but in the end, two very deserving families were chosen, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for the Reeds and the Davises.”
Though only two families could be picked to take the first rides down the slides, Larson felt that every entry The City received deserved to be recognized. “We were blown away by the responses we received. If we could have given everyone who entered a chance to take the first ride, we would have, in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do that, but we felt that everyone who entered deserved to receive something in recognition. To that end, we’ll be mailing free one-day family passes for use at the Dawe to everyone who entered the contest.”
Larson anticipates that the pool will be packed when the Reeds and the Davises ride the slides shortly after the pool opens at 10 a.m. on August 3. Red Deerians are encouraged to visit the Dawe that morning to cheer on the families and see the upgrades to the facility and the Dawe Branch of Red Deer Public Library.
While the G.H. Dawe Community Centre will open on Tuesday, August 3, the official reopening event will be held September 25 and will feature a reopening ceremony, guided tours of the facility, a barbeque, and free activities for the whole family to enjoy.
