(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City of Red Deer’s 2010 Green Deer program was a huge success, with over 4,000 registered participants volunteering with 144 groups over the two-month campaign to clean garbage that accumulated in city neighbourhoods and parks over the winter.
This year, Green Deer saw the number of businesses participating rise from 21 to 33 and Adopt a Park numbers rise from 14 to 21. Overall, in the eight years of the program, registered individuals or groups have increased from 23 to 144.
“We are especially thrilled with the increase in the Adopt a Park program,” said Suzanne Jubb, Community and Program Facilitator with the Recreation, Parks & Culture department. “These groups are committed to being stewards of a specific park for the entire year, not just during the Green Deer campaign.”
Every group or individual who volunteered for the program was entered for a chance to win a barbecue event. Participating schools also had their own prizes. Prize winners this year are as follows:
- St. Teresa of Avila Elementary School (Mrs. Smith’s grade 1 class) - The class won entrance into the Summer Sizzler outdoor pool party at the Recreation Centre, ultimate slurpee Fas Gas coupons, and transportation to and from the Recreation Centre by a City of Red Deer chartered Transit bus.
- St. Thomas Middle School (Mrs. Bouchard’s grade 6 class) - Each participant received a two-for-one swim pass and ultimate slurpee Fas Gas coupon.
- Suzanne Blackwell – Ms. Blackwell won a Barbecue Event, a free barbecue, and a $50 Fas Gas coupon. Ms. Blackwell and her husband picked over 20 bags of garbage.
