Pedestrian bridges closed due to flood damage

July 16, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City of Red Deer has closed two pedestrian bridges on Piper Creek following flood-related damage to the bridges’ supports. Significant rainfall early in the week resulted in high creek levels and high velocity stream flows, which eroded the creek banks and damaged support abutments.

One of the bridges, located south of Rotary Park Hill, has concrete abutments and appears to be structurally sound. However, with the high water levels, it is not yet possible to inspect the abutment conditions.

The abutments on the other bridge, located at 3400 Spruce Drive on the connector trail from Spruce Drive to Kin Kanyon, have been eroded to the point of failure, and the bridge has slumped into the creek.

The City has contacted Stantec Engineering to inspect the structural integrity of the bridges and provide recommendations on reinstating the abutments and the bridges. Until these inspections are completed, the bridges will remain closed to the public.

Park users are advised to obey all barricades and signs at the bridge sites.
