Residents encouraged to contact The City if they have experienced flooding
July 15, 2010
(Red Deer, Alberta) – Following a record rainfall on July 12 and 13, residents who have experienced flooding in their homes are encouraged to contact The City of Red Deer if they have been informed by their insurance provider that their claim is uninsurable.
The large rainfall experienced this week may have caused homes to experience overland flooding, which is flooding that occurs when water pours into a building through the basement windows or where the basement floor meets the wall. Overland flooding is not insurable for homes in Alberta and is very expensive to insure for businesses.
Currently, The City of Red Deer is evaluating whether they are eligible to apply for the Disaster Recovery Program. With residents’ help, The City will be able to determine the extent of damage caused by the recent rainfall to assist with this evaluation.
Residents should contact their insurance providers immediately if they are experiencing flooding. If you have been informed that your claim is uninsurable, request a letter that states this from your insurance company, and then contact The City of Red Deer’s Emergency Management Coordinator at 403-342-8258.
Residents should begin restoration of their homes immediately to ensure protection of their health and prevent further damage to their homes and belongings.
