(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City of Red Deer is searching for two lucky families to take the first plunge into the pool at the revitalized G.H. Dawe Community Centre. The winners of the First Ride Down the Slide contest, which runs until July 23, will have the chance to take the first trip down the brand new waterslides at the Dawe when the facility opens on August 3.
On top of breaking in the slides before anyone else does, the winners will also receive free one-month family swimming passes for use at the upgraded facility. June Larson, Recreation Facility Supervisor with The City, is certain that the first trip down the slides will be as exciting for the winners as the reopening of the Dawe is for the community.
“We’re proud of all the tremendous work that has been done on the Dawe since it closed for renovations in 2008,” said Larson, “but adding the waterslides is probably the biggest – and tallest – change we’ve made at the Dawe. We’re thrilled that we’re able to offer the inaugural ride down the slides to two families in our community.”
The First Ride Down the Slide contest resulted from a suggestion made on The City’s official Facebook page, according to Larson. “Our Facebook community is always excited when we provide updates on the Dawe revitalization, but never more so than when we posted about the waterslide installation. One of our Facebook fans suggested we hold a contest to decide who would take the first ride down the waterslides, and the contest evolved from there.”
Families can apply for the contest online or at a City-owned recreation facility by telling The City why their family should be chosen to take the first ride down the slide. Following the July 23 deadline, the winners will be chosen and announced.
While the G.H. Dawe Community Centre is set to open on August 3, the official reopening event will be held September 25 and will feature a reopening ceremony, guided tours of the facility, a barbeque, and free activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Families interested in taking the first ride down the slide should apply online at www.reddeer.ca or in person at the Collicutt Centre, Recreation Centre, or the Michener Centre before July 23.
