City Council to review secondary suites deadline

June 25, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – City Council is reviewing the secondary suites deadline of July 1, 2010 in which suite owners are required to register their suite or they would be subject to large penalties.

Administration is bringing recommendations forward for a Land Use Bylaw amendment to the City Council meeting on Monday to extend the registration date of July 1, 2010 to November 1, 2010. If City Council approves the amendment, secondary suite property owners will have more time to get their Development Permit applications into the Inspections & Licensing department for their existing suites.

The Secondary Suite Land Use Bylaw amendment was approved by City Council on December 14, 2009. The Bylaw gives opportunity for secondary suite owners to legalize existing suites and to provide safe and affordable housing in Red Deer.
