(Red Deer, Alberta) – In 2009, 7,009,590 kWh of The City of Red Deer’s electricity requirements for City-owned facilities were supplied through green power. This accounted for 15 per cent of City’s own electricity requirements. This use of green power has the same impact on the environment as reducing 6477 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
“The City of Red Deer is dedicated to reducing our environmental impact by using green power to run our facilities,” said Ligong Gan, Electric Light & Power Manager with The City of Red Deer. “Our usage of green power in 2009 is equivalent to taking 1426 cars off the road for one year.”
The largest users of the green power were The City’s Civic Yard facility, which used 2,464,560 kWh, and the Recreation, Parks & Culture facilities, including the Collicutt Centre and the Recreation Centre, which used 3,085,000 kWh.
Under the current five-year contract with a green power supplier, the City will continue to increase green power usage, escalating to 25 per cent of The City’s electricity requirements in 2013.
For 2010, City-owned facilities will be powered by 11,032,300 kWh of green power.
Green power offers a more environmentally friendly option for producing electricity. Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by using renewable energy from water, wind and sun in place of sources such as coal and natural gas. ENMAX currently provides wind-generated green power.
