Downtown Parkade named Sorensen Station

June 15, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Members of the Sorensen family joined Mayor Morris Flewwelling and City administration as City Council approved recommendations from the Municipal Naming Committee to name the new downtown parkade and transit terminal after the pioneer of public transit in Red Deer, Gordon Lloyd Sorensen.

“It is with great pleasure that we announce the new name of the downtown parkade and transit terminal,” said Fred Dieno, Parking Coordinator with The City of Red Deer. “It is fitting to name the parkade that will house our transit hub after the father of public transit in Red Deer.”

Gordon Lloyd Sorensen, who passed away in November 1981, was a prominent citizen and is a well-respected individual in Red Deer. In 1957, Mr. Sorensen began a bus service in the city of Red Deer. He started with one bus and eventually expanded to 14 buses when he sold his business to The City in 1966.

"Naming our parkade in his honour can help carry forward his vision for public transportation and honour Red Deer’s past,” said Mayor Morris Flewwelling. “It was great to have members of the Sorensen family with us today as we announced Sorensen Station.”

The Municipal Names Committee is committed to fostering the approval of roadway names that provide a legacy based on the rich heritage of this region.

The parkade is expected to open in August and will offer over 400 stalls to serve residents and downtown businesses. In addition to providing more parking, the parkade will allow for expanded Transit office space and kiosk retail opportunities in the northwest corner.
