(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City is encouraging Red Deer gardeners to embrace water-wise principles by sponsoring a residential naturescaping contest this summer. Those who already have water-wise landscaping and those who plan to make the switch to an ecologically responsible, low maintenance yard are invited to enter The City of Red Deer’s 2010 Water-Wise Naturescaping Contest.
“Naturescaping is a landscaping method that uses native plants to lessen your environmental impact,” said Nathalie Viau, Environmental Program Specialist for The City. “Naturescaping saves time, money and water, and the results are beautiful.”
The 2010 Water-Wise Naturescaping contest is open to Red Deer citizens who naturescape residential properties located within city limits. Entries will be judged on water conservation, landscape design and biodiversity. All entries must be located within Red Deer city limits, and the contest applies to residential property only.
All applications must be received by August 13, 2010. Entries must include:
- Minimum of 5 and maximum 10 colour photographs. Digital or hard copies are acceptable.
- A plant list, including common and/or scientific names of plants used.
- An explanation of water-efficient features within the landscape.
Entries and photographs may be submitted to the Environmental Services department at the Civic Yards; please mark entries “Attention: Naturescaping Contest.” Entries may also be emailed to environmentalservices@reddeer.ca.
Entry forms are available on the Environmental Services section of The City website at www.reddeer.ca. For tips on how to get started with naturescaping, visit your local garden centre or search for “naturescaping” on The City website.
