Green Deer's Red Deer River Clean-up a success

June 11, 2010

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Held on Sunday, June 6, the annual Red Deer River Clean-up was a huge success, with almost 100 volunteers collecting over 200 bags of garbage - including a lawn mower, mattress, and a Halloween mask - that had accumulated in the river and on the riverbank.

“We are thrilled with the support we received from the community this year. We’re lucky to have so many community members who are passionate about their city and volunteer their time to participate in this event,” said Suzanne Jubb, Community and Program Facilitator with the Recreation, Parks & Culture department.

Sponsored by NOVA Chemicals, Trout Unlimited and The City of Red Deer, the annual clean-up focused attention on the riverbanks at the BMX Park and Kerry Wood Nature Centre, and also used two jet boats to clean the river and islands.

While the clean-up is over, The City of Red Deer would like to remind residents to do their part in keeping the river free of litter year round. “We’d like to encourage citizens to help us keep the Red Deer river clean,“ said Jubb. “Some interesting items were found during the clean up, and we hope that users will take care not to litter in our river, as it is a valuable resource that we, and many plants and animals, depend on.”

Following the clean-up, NOVA Chemicals treated participants to a hamburger barbeque, and many prizes were drawn.

The City would like to thank all the volunteers and their sponsors, Nova Chemicals and Trout Unlimited, for making this event such a huge success.

On Sunday, September 19, the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up will occur. Similar to the Red Deer River Clean-up, it is a national effort to help keep our waters clean. If you are interested in sponsoring the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up, please contact Suzanne at 403-309-8409.
